How to Choose the Right Shoe for Your Foot Type

How to Choose the Right Shoe for Your Foot Type

At The Footwear Store, we understand that your feet are the foundation of your body, and finding the right shoe for your unique foot type is crucial for your overall well-being. Our team of footwear experts, in collaboration with our internal podiatrists, has put together this guide to help you make an informed decision when selecting your next pair of shoes.

Understanding Your Foot Type

Before diving into shoe selection, it's important to identify your foot type. Generally, feet fall into three main categories:

  1. Neutral: A normal arch with an even distribution of weight across the foot.
  2. Flat (Low Arch): Little to no visible arch, with the entire sole touching the ground.
  3. High Arch: A pronounced arch with a large gap between the heel and ball of the foot.

Selecting Shoes for Your Foot Type

Neutral Feet:

If you have neutral feet, you're fortunate to have a wide range of options. Look for shoes with:

  • Moderate arch support
  • Good cushioning
  • A stable heel counterShoe suggestions for neutral feet

Additional Considerations

Proper Fit: Ensure that you have the right amount of space in the toe for adults (anyone over the age 16) we recommend 1/2 Thumb space between the end of the shoe and the patient/customers biggest toe normally the big toe. for Customers under the age 16 we recommend a full thumb space to allow room for growth.

Width: Choose shoes that accommodate your foot width comfortably. Making sure you have the adequate amount of space in the width is crucial. to check this you can pull the insole out of the shoe (If possible) and place your foot on the footbed and we are looking for no part of the foot to be overhanging the insole. Another way is to do the Pinch test. This is where you pinch both sides of the shoe and if there is little to no room and feel it tight or compressive we would advise you look for the next width up.

Activity-Specific Needs: Consider the primary use of the shoe (e.g., walking, running, work) when making your selection.

Quality Materials: Look for breathable, durable materials that will support your feet throughout the day.
